Saturday, June 9th from 10-12 Noon. @ the PAC
What kind of music began and is still often played in small venues, living rooms, clubs, or at social gatherings? Both chamber music and jazz! Small groups, often centered around the piano, with strings (classical chamber music) or bass, drums, and saxophone (jazz) with the possibility of additional instruments and singers and joining the groups for a wide variety of repertoire. This class, led by classical Stravinsky scholar and jazz artist Dr. Dwight Andrews from Emory University will explore the similarities between these two musical genres which both have devoted followings. After this educational and entertaining class, hear Classic Jazz in action on Wednesday June 13th at The Farm when the Gary Motley Trio with Veronica Tate performs on a special program for the Highlands-Cashiers Chamber Music Festival.
Saturday, July 7th from 10-12 Noon @ the PAC
Beethoven himself said that he reserved his deepest, most personal and meaningful works for the chamber music genre. In this class, led by Dr. Benjamin Arnold, learn why a quartet of four string players can equal the power and grandeur of a 100-piece symphony with a full chorus. From duos of cello, violin, or horn and piano to string trios to the most perfect combination of instruments ever imagined- the string quartet- we will experience the intimacy of great music written for small settings. Enjoy a summer of demonstrations of this music at the Highlands-Cashiers Chamber Music Festival, which begins the same weekend as the class.
Both of these classes will be held at the Highlands Performing Arts Center. For class tickets, please call CLE at 828-526-8811, send emails to clehighlands@yahoo.com or visit their website at www.clehighlands.org. For concert tickets, please call HCCMF at 828-526-9060 or email us at hccmf@fontier.com.
In an effort to make the concerts easier to identify, we have color-coded the concerts — HIGHLANDS concerts (Friday & Sunday) in Blue and CASHIERS concerts (Saturday & Monday) in Red.
